CHAPTER EIGHT

“I’m ready for my close-up!” I tried to do my best Frida impersonation when Zoe opened the door to her house Tuesday after school. Zoe burst out laughing as she grabbed my arm and pulled me through the door. I guess I couldn’t pull off dramatic like Frida does.

“Did you bring everything I told you to?” Zoe asked as she grabbed the duffel bag I had packed the night before, based on her explicit instructions.

“Yes, Sergeant Fashion!” I said, giving her a mock salute.

“We’ll see about that,” Zoe said as she led the way to her room. She dropped my bag onto her bed, unzipped it, and started going through it, tossing clothes onto the bed.

While she was doing that, I was amazed to see that one corner of her room had been completely redone. Where there used to be a comfy, plush chair and an ottoman, there was now a mini-photo studio. A white backdrop hung against the wall, with a tall stool placed in the center. Professional lights, like the ones I had seen when I had done those modeling shoots, were on stands facing the backdrop. A fancy, expensive-looking camera was attached to a tripod.

I gasped and turned to Zoe. “No wonder your photos look so amazing. You’ve got a totally professional setup here. I didn’t know you were that serious about your blog. I’m impressed.”

“I’m really lucky that I was able to use some of my bat mitzvah money to buy the camera and the lights,” she explained. “At first I didn’t think my mom and dad were going to let me, but Mom finally said yes, as long as I put the rest in my college fund and promised not to use it for anything else. I’m so happy about the setup.” She beamed as she looked at it.

“But now,” she said, turning her full attention back to me, “it’s time to focus on you and what your first look is going to be.”

She went back to pawing through the items in my duffel bag. “Hmmm…” She was very thoughtful before she pulled out a pair of jogging pants and a black sweatshirt. “Let’s try this first, but before we get you changed, let me get Yvette.”

Zoe left the room and returned with her sister. Yvette looked a lot like Zoe, with the same strawberry-blond hair, but hers was much longer and pulled back into a messy bun on top of her head. She was wearing sweats that had old paint splatters on them and a T-shirt.

“I told you I had to work on my art project today,” Yvette was protesting as Zoe led her into the room, but when she saw me, her eyes lit up. “Oh, look at those cheekbones. A little contouring, and they’ll pop!” she said excitedly.

Zoe pulled the stool over to her bed, and I perched on it while Yvette went to work, with lotions and creams that smelled great, and tiny little brushes that tickled my skin. I started to relax, and she chattered as she worked.
